Goals Reflection

The goals that I made in my EDU 202 class were to find more creative and relative ways to represent math topics to students and improve classroom management. My plan of action consisted of observing more teachers and writing notes on the strategies used in the classroom. Also I planned to improve my classroom management skills by practice in the classroom, which consists of teaching the whole class and working with individual students.
After completing my second field experience class that consisted of being in Hellgate High School and Target Range Middle School, I did achieve both of these goals in both a large proportion. I believe the goals that I made will never be complete because there are always new things to continually learn as a teacher. In my goal of finding more creative ways to represent math topics to students was achieved greatly by observing Ms. Lokey because she is always finding multiple ways to model a mathematical concept. While at Hellgate I got the chance to bring in traveling with my three-day lesson plan, which was a very creative way to represent math. In my time management skills goal, I have come to improve substantially and this was because of the feedback that was given to me as I was teaching my lesson. I understand that on the days that you know students will be a bit rowdy, it is best to just draw attention to that and ask the students to take a few breaths and be respectful to their teacher and fellow classmates.
My goals for student teaching will still encounter some of the above goals but my focus will change a bit more because of the place I will be student teaching. I will be doing my student teaching out of the country at an International School in Kodaikanal, India. There will be many experiences that I will be able to be apart of and observe many different thoughts/schools of teaching because of the very diverse population of students and teachers. The following goals are not my limitation of goals but more of a general overview of what I would like to learn about by the time I get back to America.
Goal 1: Learn about different curriculums that are learner-based and compare these curriculums to the Montana and/or United States common curriculum.  To reach this goal, I plan on talking to many different teachers at the school about what their home-country’s curriculum looks like and what parts about it do they find effective or hindering to the learner. I will be teaching students who are heading to the International Baccalaureate Diploma program, which is a more inquiry-based learning.
Goal 2: Discover a balance on being apart of students’ extracurricular activities. While I am student teaching I would like to be apart of the students’ lives outside of the classroom especially because all of the students I will be teaching are boarding students. To achieve this goal I will sign up for school activities and ask other teachers how they balance helping out after school.

Goal 3: Create a better sense of time management. Its not a secret that teachers always have a lot of work to do all the time and this is why I would like to improve my time management skills. I have never had a hard time with this skill set but I know that teaching is a different ballpark and that being intentional with this goal will help my teaching career in the future.
